3D Sculpture

3DSculptureTo make a big, bold visual statement in downtown Greenville, it’s going to take more than paint.

While the background of the mural will be a painted, brightly colored geometric design, local artist Cathy Smithey’s plan for the Armstrong Appliance building takes it a step further with custom-built metal rings to add a three-dimensional, layered effect.

As if that’s not enough, we’re planning to install backlighting behind the metal sculpture to make it visible and attention-getting at night. It will help to give downtown Greenville a more youthful, playful look after dark.

Local Art Showcase

LocalArtShowcaseWe think art should be alive and changing, not just static. And that’s why we’re including a giant, four-foot by eight-foot framed showcase where we can display the work of local artists on a rotating basis.

There are lots of reasons we think this is cool.

For one thing, we’ve got a lot of extremely talented and creative artists in Hunt County. This will give them a high-traffic place to put their work on display.

For another, placing new artwork in the mural will draw attention later on. Even the biggest, boldest painted murals will eventually become passe over time as drivers and pedestrians get used to seeing them. But with the chance to regularly feature new artwork, we’ll keep the downtown space looking new and fresh.

We could also potentially use this space to promote community events and attractions downtown, such as Rally ‘Round Greenville, the Farmers Market and Backstreet Bash. With an high-end industrial frame designed to showcase art on a changing basis, the possibilities are limitless.

Honoring Our History

Honoring Our History

History

One of our biggest goals at Hunt County Public Art was to tie Hunt County’s rich history in with the modern mural design, linking past and present visually.

We did that by referencing one of the most noteworthy parts of Greenville’s history: the Flaming Flashes.

FlamingFlashMany of the world’s most famous high-kicking dance lines — from the Rockettes in New York City to the Kilgore College Rangerettes to the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders — have been influenced by the pioneering work done here in Greenville. Gussie Nell Davis popularized the high-kicking dance style and unique uniforms for the Flaming Flashes at Greenville High School before spreading her influence to Kilgore and around the world.

To honor that heritage, our design plan includes a large cutout of Gussie Nell Davis created from an actual historic photograph.

And in the future, we can see that same concept perhaps being applied in many areas downtown: a life-size character from Hunt County’s history helping to direct foot traffic — and attention from visitors — to the many interesting and architecturally significant buildings from the area’s cotton-rich heritage.

2019 Hearts for the Arts set for Feb. 9

2019 Hearts for the Arts set for Feb. 9

Mark your calendars for the sixth annual Hearts for the Arts, a celebration party for supporters of public art in Hunt County.

The event will be Saturday, Feb. 9, 2019 at the home of Byron Taylor.
We have already raised enough funds to create two new murals in Greenville. The project proposals will be unveiled at the party on Feb. 9.

The first Hunt County Public Art installation wasn’t just a painted mural. It was a fully fleshed-out idea that has been thoughtfully and boldly designed to include a painted background, directional signage, a life-size sculpture of an original Flaming Flash heritage figure, a four-by-eight-foot framed section for changeable art, a metal sculpture attached to the wall and backlit at night, and a three-dimensional sculpture that sits on the edge of the sidewalk.

Wondering where the planned art installation will be?

Well, you can see it on Google Street View right here.

The planned art installation is on the side of the historic Armstrong Appliance building in downtown Greenville.

As you enter the square headed north on Johnson Street, drivers are greeted with a space created 100 years ago that is currently in need of major maintenance, and a grand spot on the right side of the historic Armstrong Appliance building makes the perfect canvas for a new, modern mural.
